Erymanthos Mountain & River

Erymanthos is a mountain range in the southern part of Achaea and the northeastern part of Elis. With an elevation of 2,224 meters, it is the fourth-tallest mountain in the Peloponnese peninsula. The summit is located on the boundary of Achaea and Elis. Historically, Mount Erymanthos was part of northwestern Arcadia, where it was the second-tallest mountain range. The northern portion belonged to the historic Achaea.

We have arrived in the village of Kalenji very late on a Friday night. Our goal was to start on Saturday morning and cross the whole Erymanthos mountain range. Plan was to get up at 5.30 on Saturday morning and from Kalenji (South-West) to move towards the highest peak of Erymanthos, Olonos and to descent North East of the mountain. As first goal, we had the Profitis Ilias (Elias) peak something we have achieved in 4 hours from our starting point. The route was very rough and we had to walk and climb on rocks while we were carrying all our camping gear, food and several liters of water each one of us.

We had a map with us which was indicating a chapel on top of Profitis Ilias peak. As soon we arrived there we have noticed there was not any chapel or signs of a small church. For a little while we were wondering if we have reached the correct peak, but after we have consulted our gps devices we came to the conclusion that the map was not accurate. This can be a significant problem if the weather conditions are not good and someone wants to find a refuge to survive. Nevertheless, after a small break for snacks and water we left Profitis Ilias and by following the west ridge of Erymanthos we climbed towards Olonos.

On that point and after 6 hours of hard ascent, very high temperatures for the season and the sun being harsh on us, we decided to have a small break for hydrating ourselfs.

Finally, after a lot of effort, mainly due to high temperature and lack of water we have managed to reach the top of Olonos and to enjoy the views from up there. Breathtaking views.

We stayed silent on the top for about 30 minutes and after that we have decided to descent. Our water supplies were close to zero and we wanted to descent as fast as possible in order to find fresh water and hydrate ourselves. While moving off the mountain we have passed beautiful valleys where local sheppards pass their summer time with their goats.
